Clerity Announces 64-bit UniKix Mainframe Rehosting Software

Enhanced mainframe compatibility simplifies large-scale migrations

Chicago, IL – December 14, 2009 – Clerity, a full-service provider of mainframe migration, modernization, and optimization solutions, today announced the availability of important new capabilities in UniKix 11.2, its robust mainframe rehosting software designed to run legacy applications and data on agile, cost-effective open systems environments.

In the latest UniKix release, Clerity has added:
  • 64-bit native performance.
  • Support for sync level 2 communications across SNA networks.
  • A new JCL pre-processing option.
These additions make UniKix even more suitable for organizations looking to offload mainframe MIPS compute cycles to improve economies of scale and avoid costly upgrades, or for businesses that want to completely replace mainframe systems as part of strategic modernization initiatives.

UniKix software enables companies to lower annual operating costs up to 70 percent, while providing a flexible path forward for mission-critical mainframe application and data investments. Large enterprises worldwide such as NYSE Euronext, BNP Paribas, and the U.S. Department of Defense depend on UniKix to power business-critical online and batch applications originally written in a variety of languages, including COBOL, Natural, Assembler and PL/1.

Dale Vecchio, an analyst with Gartner Inc. covering application development and platform migration, sees rising costs, skilled personnel retirements, and a lack of IT agility leading more organizations with legacy workloads to consider mainframe rehosting.

“Rehosting solutions provide a relatively low-cost and low-risk way to reduce mainframe operating costs,” comments Vecchio in a recent Gartner Research note entitled “Mainframe Rehosting Products Offer Lower Risks”. “They minimize the amount of change in the original legacy applications, maintaining the business value they provide.”

With this release, UniKix software offers 64-bit native performance and the ability to address more than 1 terabyte (TB) of RAM within a single process, while making more efficient use of shared memory. UniKix is fully optimized for large scale implementations and includes support for multiprocessing for optimal performance across virtualized and physical CPUs.

UniKix 11.2 offers the same XA distributed transaction processing (DTP) support to UniKix customers with legacy SNA networks that is already provided over TCP/IP and across third-party products such as MQ Series and popular relational databases. Sync level 2 communications over SNA is important for maintaining data integrity during phased mainframe migration projects or when communications with external legacy systems must be maintained post migration.

Other advances in UniKix 11.2 include:
  • A JCL Pre-Processor for enhanced support of dynamic submission of JCL batch jobs, especially for legacy environments leveraging the Natural NATRJE interface.
  • A new utility that allows for the translation of Control-M JCL to MVS JCL; a feature that further simplifies the migration of existing mainframe JCL with BMC Control-M Auto Edit variable constructs.
UniKix 11.2 mainframe rehosting software is available immediately. Detailed information on the new features available in this release can be found at www.clerity.com/unikix.
