Chicago, IL – January 20, 2010 – Clerity, a full-service provider of mainframe migration, modernization, and optimization solutions, today announced the successful completion of an Adabas Natural migration project at a leading natural gas and electricity company. Moving mainframe applications to Clerity's UniKix rehosting technology significantly reduced the energy provider's annual software license fees while simplifying operations and preserving critical business logic.
Developed more than two decades ago, the energy supplier's metering and billing application was based on Software AG mainframe technologies such as Natural, Adabas, Predict, and EntireX. Although the application met the organization's functional requirements, migrating it to cost-effective open systems has provided benefits not possible on the mainframe. Rehosting has significantly improved company efficiency and insured high availability of critical energy services.
After a detailed assessment of the mainframe environment, all application programs, data, and infrastructure requirements were rehosted to the new system in just eight months. During the project, ongoing business operations continued seamlessly.
Many components of the organization's mainframe environment were transitioned to open systems:
- The online mainframe Natural environment was moved to an interactive Natural environment on UNIX.
- Batch Natural programs and JCL were rehosted to Natural and JCL on the new system to be executed by UniKix Batch Processing Environment (BPE) software.
- Adabas, Generation Data Groups (GDGs), and sequential files were moved to Adabas, GDGs (supported through UniKix BPE), and sequential files on the new target system.
During this move, the energy provider also simplified its mainframe software portfolio by replacing or removing expensive proprietary components such as Advanced Function Printing, Document Composition Functionality, and assorted output and print management features with cost-effective open systems alternatives.
UniKix mainframe rehosting software provides a mission-critical environment for deploying mainframe applications and data on open systems. By leveraging existing programs, skill sets and data investments, Clerity helps businesses reduce IT costs and optimize legacy investments without sacrificing functionality or introducing risk into the migration process. Given the strong compatibility between UniKix and mainframe technology, the organization's dynamic JCL functionality such as Natural remote job entry (NATRJE), Auto Edit Variables and complex conditional job streams could be preserved on open systems with UniKix BPE software.
“Clerity's comprehensive mainframe migration, modernization, and rehosting solutions add value to organizations by optimizing their existing legacy investments, enabling new business management initiatives, and lowering annual operational costs by as much as 70 percent, ” noted Cameron Jenkins, COO of Clerity.
